This individualised program is designed to support children as they prepare to transition from primary to secondary school. Delivered through one-on-one sessions, it focuses on helping children understand the changes they can expect, develop confidence communicating in new environments, and strengthen the social communication skills needed to thrive in secondary school.
Program Goals
Increase Awareness of Secondary School Expectations:
Help children understand how secondary school differs from primary, including changes in routines, classroom structures, teacher communication styles, and learning expectations.
Develop Confidence in New Settings:
Support children in building confidence to manage unfamiliar situations and engage effectively with new communication partners in a larger, more dynamic school environment.
Strengthen Self-Advocacy and Independence:
Encourage children to express their needs clearly, ask for clarification when needed, and communicate confidently when seeking assistance or support.
Enhance Social and Interpersonal Understanding:
Build children’s awareness of social communication skills such as perspective-taking, conversation management, and adapting communication across different social and academic contexts.
Support Emotional Preparedness Through Communication:
Within the scope of speech pathology practice, guide children to use communication as a tool for emotional regulation. This includes expressing worries, identifying and verbalising feelings about change, and developing strategies to seek help or reassurance when feeling uncertain or overwhelmed.
